Family: Cicadellidae
Subfamily: Typhlocybinae
Length: typically about 3.5 mm
West Virginia and neighboring states are home to three species in this genus, all with the primary host plants Grape and Redbud:
- Hymetta anthisma, 3.3-3.6 mm
- Hymetta balteata, 3.1-3.4 mm
- Hymetta trifasciata, 3.0-3.4 mm
There is one other species found in the eastern United States (Hymetta kansasensis, 3.2-3.5 mm), ranging in the upper Mississippi Valley. A fifth Nearctic Hymetta species (H. arizoniana, 3.3-3.7 mm) has been reported from Arizona only.
Left: As in so many other leafhopper groups, color is not a key character in identifying Hymetta to species. In Hymetta generally, the broad transverse bands may be either brown or red.
