The Latin name scarlatina refers to this species' red flecks on the dorsal surfaces, although sometimes, as in the individual shown here, the spots may darken to brown.
The Ponana scarlatina shown on this page was photographed in June.
Sometimes in this species there is a reddish to brown spot at each ocelli; in the photo at right these spots are very faint.
