The original series of this species, described by Hamilton in 1980, was collected in North Carolina, hence the specific name.

Leafhoppers in this subgenus have Poplar species as the host plants.

Males in Idiocerus typically have a tiny disc near the apex of the antenna, and the shape of the disc can help separate the various species.
