Length: typically 20-25 mm

 

Tipula caloptera antennae are dark at the base and yellowish apically.

Gelhaus found a number of larval collection records from various workers; habits of the collection sites included "wet or submerged mats of mosses and algae," and mosses associated with a cold and clean stream (Gelhaus, 1986).

Adults are most often encountered in West Virginia in May.

Tipula caloptera ranges from Minnesota to Newfoundland, and south to Missouri and Florida.
