Redborg, Hinesly, and Ziegler (1982) described the typical larval habitats of Moth flies: "liquid or semiliquid environments containing decaying organic matter," such as "puddles and tree holes." Several species, however, the Drain flies, enter the world of humans with larvae that feed "in the gelatinous material surrounding the rocks of sewage effluent trickling filters."
