The venerable American naturalist Thomas Say described this species in 1823.
Nephrotoma macrocera is on the wing in the summer months.
Males (not pictured) have unusually long antennae that are pale at the base.
Range extends from Wisconsin to Maine, and south to Kansas and the southern Appalachians. The species has also been reported from Florida. The favored habitat of Nephrotoma macrocera is woodlands.
