Syrphid Fly Larvae, Under Bark

The larvae of Syrphid flies are robust, and in most cases they are divided into clear segments. The two posterior spiracles are close together and elongated into a pair of tubes (see right side of the larvae in the above photo). The larvae of some species live in a liquid medium, and the tubes are much elongated, functioning like a snorkel.
