In Chrysopilus thoracicus the dorsum of each abdominal segment is clothed with pile on the apical end, except that there is a median interruption. The wings are largely dark.
The femora are dark while the tibia and tarsus are yellowish brown; the halteres are dark.
Chrysopilus thoracicus has no published records from West Virginia, but the flies shown on this page were photographed in the state in mid-May to mid-June.
Right: In this species, the abdomen has a ringed appearance, though the rings are incomplete at the middle of the dorsum. This male fly has much larger eyes than the female shown above.
