Cephalops sp.

Big-Headed Fly

Family: Pipunculidae

Subfamily: Pipunculinae

Length: typically 7.5-8.0 mm

The eggs of Big-Headed Flies in the genus Cephalops develop within the bodies of Delphacid planthoppers.

The fly shown in the photo is a female. A male would have even more surface area devoted to the eyes, which touch each other in the males of most Big-Headed Fly species. Females also have a noticeable ovipositor (which in the photo is hidden by the wings).
