Scarab Beetle

Valgus seticollis, Scarab Beetle, Flower Chafer photo

Family: Scarabaeidae

Subfamily: Cetoniinae

Length: 6-8 mm

Researchers report that these beetles are usually found in colonies with a majority of the individuals female, although sometimes colonies have the sexes in equal numbers.

Termite-infested wood is the most common habitat of Valgus seticollis. Early summer finds the adults feeding on flowers. Dillon and Dillon (1972) report that adults overwinter in colonies below logs, or amid the flannel-like leaves of Common Mullein.

The beetle shown here was feeding on a flower at the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge in Pleasants County.
