Family: Carabidae
Subfamily: Carabinae
Length: 15-30 mm
Scarites subterraneus is often found walking around on the ground, or else under the protection of a log or dead leaves. Ciegler (2000) reports that one of these beetles in South Carolina was found inside a corn stalk feeding on a corn stalk borer.
The name "Pedunculate Ground Beetle" has also been used for this species, but note that that name has also been used for another Ground Beetle in a different genus. As always, scientific names offer more precision than common names. A peduncle, by the way, is a narrow area connecting two wider areasin this case, connecting the elytra to the pronotum.
