Like many other Darkling Beetles, Platydema ellipticus is found under bark, where it feeds on fungi growing there. Often groups of Platydema ellipticus are found together, sometimes with other species of Darklings present too.
Harry B Weiss (1919) reported finding larvae, pupae, and adults living in a fungus, Polyporus gilvus, in New Jersey in mid-September.
