Pedilus terminalis

False Ant-like Flower Beetle

Pedilus terminalis, False Ant-like Flower Beetle photo

Family: Pyrochroidae

Subfamily: Pedilinae

Length: 5-7 mm

The False Ant-like Flower Beetles were formerly in their own family, Pedilidae, and before that they were a part of the family Anthicidae. Fifty species now have a home among the Pyrochroidae, the Fire-Colored Beetles.

Like the others in its subfamily, Pedilus terminalis is found on flowers or under foliage. The one shown here was photographed on Trillium in West Virginia in April.

Another Pyrochroid sometimes encountered in West Virginia is Neopyrochoa femoralis.
