Elaters in this genus are slender and elongate, but vary greatly in size.

Their life histories vary considerably, so that some are found on flowers, some under stones or leaf litter, and many on foliage.

Larvae of Limonius beetles live in the soil, where they feed on tiny rootlets and sprouting seeds.
