Leptostylus transversus photo, Flat-faced Longhorned Beetle

Family: Cerambycidae

Subfamily: Lamiinae

Length: 6-14 mm

The beetle pictured here was on a tree trunk in Upshur County, gnawing on some lichen on a cool April day.

Note how the antennae are held close to the beetle and reach nearly to the rear of the abdomen.

There are three Nearctic species in the genus Leptostylus, all of them found in eastern North America. They are L. albescens, L. gibbulosus, and the one pictured here, L. transversus.

Leptostylus transversus reportedly is attracted to lights.
