Larva, Family Trogossitidae

Bark-Gnawing Beetles

Temnoscheila sp., Beetle larva

Larvae in the family Trogossitidae are found in a bewildering variety of habitats and seem to vary considerably as to diet.

The majority are found in logs and dead trees and are predatory on the insects found there.

One species, Tenebroides mauritanicus in an important pest in stored grain products.

Other Trogossitid larvae are found in leaf litter, in fungi, or even on flowers. One species reportedly is a predator on Cedar Scale insects.

The larva pictured at left has been tentatively identified as Temnoscheila sp.
