Dircaea liturata

False Darkling Beetle

Dircaea liturata, False Darkling Beetle photo

Family: Melandryidae

Subfamily: Melandryinae

Length: 7-11 mm

Dircaea liturata has distinctive markings on the elytra. Adults are often found under bark.

The one shown here was on the outer bark of a tree and seemed to be feeding on the Script Lichen. Interestingly, the Latin species name means "one who erases."

Another member of this family found in the Mountain State is Hypulus simulator.
