Adults of Bassareus mammifer are seen most often in West Virginia in June and July. A note on one series of specimen labels from the state indicates the series was collected on Currant.
Marshall (2006) has a photograph of a female Bassareus mammifer in the process of coating an egg with a protective "fecal blanket."
There are several described subspecies.
